People are showing up for their neighbors in lovely and unique ways. Last week (March 9–15th), Manos Amigas Utah received generous donations from the community: organic pumpkins (calabazas) from a farmer in Springdale, white bean stew, children’s clothing and shoes, bubble wands for kids, and many diapers, wipes, and nonperishable foods.

Thank you for supporting your neighbors who are navigating detention and deportation. With your help, we were able to:

1- Deliver groceries to 7 families who are separated from loved ones due to detention or deportation. These groceries will provide about a week’s worth of meals for 35 people, including adults, teenagers, and children. Community members generously donated 4 of the 7 grocery batches—thank you!

2- Provide diapers and formula to 2 families with babies, thanks to generous donations from SUMAC and individuals who donate to the Orange Peel.

3- Help 5 families stay connected with loved ones in detention by adding funds to their communication accounts so they could speak with their sons and husbands.

4- Support a mom in getting shoes and clothing for her daughter and niece.

It has been incredible to see a network of support come into being so that no one has to face the hardship of being separated from their loved ones because of detention or deportation alone.

We offer sincere thanks to @sumac_stg SUMAC for organizing a Community Care Drive to raise funds and collect donations for community members affected by ICE detentions and deportations. SUMAC used their website, social media, and network of local organizations and individuals to spread the word and encourage people to donate urgently needed baby supplies for families. SUMAC is continuing the drive to provide as much support as possible for our community.

From the delicious food to the inspiring conversations and generous contributions, every moment reminded us how powerful it is when people come together to care for their community.

This week (Feb. 23 - Mar. 1), Manos Amigas Utah delivered groceries to 7 newly single-mom families. In an instant, these women were separated from their husbands and became the sole income-earners to support their children.

We are pushing back against the idea that ICE is only arresting dangerous criminals. Manos Amigas Utah helps families whose fathers and husbands have been detained and deported because they have pending work visas, overstayed visas, minor traffic violations, and previous deportation orders.

We help families whose fathers and husbands were detained as they were driving to work. We help families whose fathers and husbands were detained AT work.

This week, Manos Amigas Utah provided:

1- Groceries for 8 total families separated from their loved ones because of detention or deportation. This food will make a week's worth of meals for 41 people including adults, teenagers and children.

2- Formula and/or diapers to 3 families with babies/toddlers.

3- Outreach to 5 immigration law organizations/attorneys on behalf of the families we serve.

4- Presented to the Women’s Democratic Club of Washington County. Big thanks to the Women Dems for donating a trunk full of nonperishables and 5 pizzas, and for pledging to buy groceries for families separated from a loved one because of detention or deportation.

This week, families received the following items donated to Orange Peel: diapers, wipes, cereal, beans, rice, spaghetti, pasta sauce, peanut butter, jam, ramen noodles, tuna. Thank you for donating to Orange Peel and supporting your neighbors. ❤️

We are STILL ACCEPTING donations for our families at Orange Peel. We are in desperate need of Diapers (Size 2, 5, and 6) and Wipes!

Manos Amigas Utah began tracking the detention of our neighbors in Washington County in August 2025. Here's what we've seen over the past five months.

Edgar (name changed to protect his privacy) is one of 215 people who were detained at Purgatory Correctional Facility for being undocumented between Aug. 17 and Dec. 27. Of the 215 people detained, 122 had no criminal charges and 93 committed a crime (DUI is the most common charge). Having "undocumented" status is a civil, not criminal, offense. This set of clothes tells a story about one of the families in southern Utah recently separated from a loved one because of detention or deportation.

Last week, a woman reached out to Manos Amigas Utah to get help calling her husband at Purgatory Correctional Facility. We added money to her husband's jail account so that he could talk to his wife and three children. This is their story:

He had been detained by ICE while working construction. His clothes were dirty and had concrete on them. He was grateful for the change of clothes he received at Purgatory, but they were too big. He knew he would soon be transferred from Purgatory to detention centers in Nevada and Arizona before being deported.

His wife was worried about her husband being alone in Mexico without clothes and shoes that fit. How would he navigate and keep himself safe?

Manos Amigas Utah volunteers learned his pants and shoe size, what type of clothing he would be most comfortable in, and what colors he wanted. We bought him a set of clothes and gave it to an officer who worked at Purgatory. Graciously, this officer said he would try to get the clothes to the man who needed them. We're so grateful he tried.

But it was too late. By the time the officer returned to the jail with the clothes, the woman's husband had already been transferred to ICE custody and sent to Nevada. This man had no criminal charges. He was working to provide for his beautiful family.

These clothes will be saved for someone who may need them in the future.

DEMAND ON OUR LOCAL FOOD BANKS IS INCREASING SIGNIFICANTLY. 4,616 SNAP households and 9,860 SNAP individuals in Washington County are losing a major portion of their benefits this November. Children, the elderly, and people with disabilities account for 70% of SNAP recipients. If you’re able, please donate to one of the organizations listed above.

THE UTAH FOOD BANK SOUTHERN DISTRIBUTION CENTER at 4416 River Rd, St. George, UT 84790 accepts donations Mon-Fri 8 AM-4:30 PM. Here is their list of most needed food items: Peanut Butter, Mac & Cheese, Canned Meats (tuna, chicken or beef), Chili, SpaghettiOs/Ravioli, Canned Fruits, Other Boxed Meals. Canned and packaged food must be in original packaging (accepted up to 1 year past the sell-by or best-by date). All items must be in good condition: no dents, with original labels intact.

THE UTAH FOOD BANK ALSO ACCEPTS: Personal care items (toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.) must be new and in original packaging with labels; Household cleaning products; Diaper packages must be un-opened, with sizes clearly marked; AND Whole fresh produce, including home grown raw produce, without significant decay (80% salvageable); Chopped fresh produce in food-grade packaging (packed separately); Commercially prepared/packaged foods chilled at or below 40°F that have not been served or placed on a buffet; USDA packaged beef, pork, poultry or fish that is frozen solid at or below 0°F (must be packaged apart from other products and separated by species to avoid cross contamination); Commercially packaged dairy and deli products stored at or below 40°F (up to expiration date); Commercially packaged shelled eggs; Frozen meals in original packaging.

Washington County signed a 287(g) agreement, enabling local law enforcement to assist ICE in detaining and holding undocumented immigrants at Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane. In the last 6 weeks, more than 75 southern Utahns have been detained. Manos Amigas is working to help detained and deported individuals and their families.

Our Story

Who We Are

Manos Amigas Utah is a new community organization working to support detained and deported immigrants and their families in southern Utah. Our mission is to provide emergency aid and compassionate support to individuals and families as they navigate detention and deportation.

Manos Amigas Utah is a 100% volunteer-run organization. Our team works hard to respond to every request as quickly as possible, and we appreciate your patience as we serve our community. Our programs are funded entirely by community donations, with the average donation amount being $150. We are not able to provide rent assistance for families, but we are able to provide groceries, baby supplies, and phone & commissary money for loved ones at detention centers.

Our vision is that all immigrants in southern Utah are supported by their neighbors.

We are building a supportive community for immigrant families as they navigate detention and deportation. With our emergency aid, phone fund for detained immigrants, and resilience resources, we aim to make a tangible difference in our neighbors' lives.

For undocumented immigrants detained at Purgatory Correctional Facility in Hurricane, Utah even the smallest necessities are out of reach. We help our neighbors stay in contact with their families and purchase items at the commissary, bringing dignity, connection and comfort during a frightening time.

If you, or someone you know, needs help navigating the detention or deportation of a loved one, please call (435) 767-1388. This is a google phone number, and will allow you to leave a message. After we receive your message, we will find a vetted Spanish-speaking volunteer to call you back. You can also fill out this form.

Manos Amigas Utah can provide phone minutes for people detained at Purgatory Correctional Facility, and can help families track their loved one through the deportation system. We can also provide groceries and baby supplies for families separated from a loved one.
